More Than a Message - Personal Statement

Growing up between countries and being raised in Miami immersed me in a true melting pot of cultures, perspectives, and stories. In that environment, I discovered my greatest strength: building community. In group settings, I naturally bridge gaps between people, paying attention not only to what is said but to how others feel and are understood. What once felt instinctive became intentional through leadership roles and professional experiences, where I began to see communication as strategy rather than chance. I learned that the right message, delivered with clarity and empathy, can shape perception and build trust, which is what ultimately drew me to public relations.

That impact became especially clear when I hosted a Special Olympics event at my school. Beyond coordinating logistics, I was responsible for shaping how the event was presented to the community. I wanted the message to reflect inclusion and respect, ensuring the athletes were celebrated for their determination and abilities rather than framed through pity. Through careful planning and intentional language, I worked to communicate the deeper purpose of the event to participants and attendees alike. That experience showed me that communication has the power to influence how people are seen and valued.

Through continued leadership roles and creative projects, I have come to understand the responsibility that comes with shaping a narrative. Whether collaborating with a team or contributing to branding and storytelling efforts, I focus on audience, tone, and intention. I have learned that effective communication is not about speaking the loudest, but about listening carefully, adapting thoughtfully, and connecting authentically.

I am drawn to public relations because it allows me to give meaning to messages and ensure they are conveyed with integrity. I want to help individuals and organizations communicate with purpose, turning ideas into stories that resonate and build trust. At Florida State University, I hope to strengthen my strategic communication skills and continue growing into a communicator who uses storytelling not only to promote, but to connect, represent, and amplify the voices behind every message.
